The World's Funniest Joke

The world's funniest joke is a term used by Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire in 2002 to summarize one of the results of his research. For his experiment, named LaughLab, he created a website where people could rate and submit jokes. Purposes of the research included discovering the joke that had the widest appeal and understanding among different cultures, demographics and countries.

The winning joke, which was later found to be based on a 1951 Goon show sketch by Spike Milligan, was submitted by Gurpal Gosall of Manchester:

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?". The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

The second place finisher and early leader was this joke, submitted by Geoff Anandappa of Blackpool:

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go on a camping trip, and after finishing their dinner they retire for the night, and go to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend.

Japan has always been a place where you could find unimaginably creepy things. I do not know is it because of their culture or what but from time to time we have oportunity to hear about really incredible things from this part of the world.

Today we are going to talk about one location which is awesome and creepy at the same time. The Kori no Suizokukan is frozen aquarium. It is a place where you can find about few hundreds of frozen animals from different seas.

Animals are frozen and placed in ice cubes. If you want to visit this place you’ll have to use a special suit which keeps you warm since the temperatures in this place are lower than -20 degrees Celsius.

After you are done with the visit you can warm up in Maguro Shashimi restaurant which is few steps away from this frozen aquarium.

My buddy approached me and said he is planning to buy a 23 feet long Ferrari. I made the pun of his plans by saying it must be a long laminated painting. But who knew I will become the butt of my own “witticism”.

Yah! He was talking about the 23 feet long roadster with 3.6 liter V8, 400bhp that is expected to hit the UK market this month at the European Limousine and Chauffeur Show. The formation and the production of this peerless limo is done by limo boss Dan Cowley; who is the blessed owner of the astounding ten-wheeled Terminator (Europe’s longest stretch Hummer).

The Pagani Zonda R is one freaky-fast exotic. In fact, we found out exactly how amazing the 750 horsepower supercar was when it turned in a Ferrari 599xx-crushing lap time of 6:47.5 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Ford Mustang Boss 302 is back for 2012!

The car that Mustang fans have been hoping Ford would build for a very, very long time is finally here: the 2012 Boss 302. Dave Pericak, the Mustang chief engineer says it all.

"Boss is a hallowed word around here, and we couldn't put that name on a new Mustang until we were sure everything was in place to make this car a worthy successor. We were either going to do it right or not do it at all - no one on the team was going to let Boss become a sticker and wheel package."

Amen, Dave. A true Boss 302 is raw, hardcore and race-inspired, and Ford delivered the goods. The latest special edition Mustang comes with plenty of items that will excite road racing fans - an upgraded clutch, short-throw shifter, adjustable suspension, improved brakes and a more potent version of the 5.0-liter V8 that produces 440 horsepower and 380 lb-ft torque thanks to a new intake and more aggressive camshafts. Ford claims the Boss 302 will be able to break 1.0g and lap a typical road course two seconds faster than the standard Mustang GT. Ford engineers even reportedly benchmarked the BMW M3 when developing the Boss 302, aiming to beat the famous Bavarian coupe around Laguna Seca, which they claim to have achieved. More in the jump!

The exterior is inspired by the original 1969 model with either a black or white roof panel, C-stripe, closed fog lamp openings and a more aggressive front splitter and rear spoiler. Available colors are more eye-catching than the standard choices and include Competition Orange, Performance White, Kona Blue Metallic, Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallic and Race Red.

2010 Boss 302 owners will enjoy a more aural experience from the cockpit thanks to eleven pounds of sound-deadening material removed from the car. The interior also gets a dark metallic finish for the instrument panel, gauge cluster and door panel trim, Alcantara-covered steering wheel and an optional package with Recaro high performance seats.

The human body is one of the most incredible machines ever, but its sensory input methods are somewhat limited. We have these five senses to tell us all about our world. What if we had a sixth sense – one that allowed us to draw on collective human knowledge? That’s what Pattie Maes and Pranav Mistry of MIT’s Media Lab propose. They want to equip humans with a roving, interactive internet-equipped interface that gives instant, nearly unlimited information about our surroundings while letting us manipulate information like never before.

Their invention, called (appropriately) SixthSense, consists of a small wearable camera, a mini-projector, and colored finger markers. The colored markers act as cues to the camera to let it follow your finger movements. Simple movements are recognized by the system and act as commands. For example, drawing a circle on your wrist tells the system to project a watch face onto your arm. Framing a scene with your fingers will cue the system to snap a picture.

Any surface can be the screen for this ultimate computer. Pick up a book and reviews of that title will be projected right onto its cover. Hold up your hand and read which movies are playing, or even use your hand as a phone keypad. And you won’t even need to wear the goofy gloves Tom Cruise wore to interact with his system in Minority Report. You can wear the colored bands on your fingers, or simply paint your fingernails different colors.

The camera picks up information from just about everything in your physical environment. If you go into a store and pick up a product, the system will tell you how well it matches your particular tastes and possibly give you further related information. Holding a plane boarding pass in front of the camera will allow the system to project flight information onto the paper.

Newspapers will no longer be a static source of information that’s old before it even gets to you. When wearing SixthSense, the system projects right onto the paper updated bits about the news stories that you’re reading. Reading the paper would become a more dynamic, interactive experience.

Although the incredible system is at least several years away from being ready for mass consumption, the team working on the project is confident that it will someday be a reality. The technology already exists, but condensing it into a small, inconspicuous package may be a challenge. According to the above video, the entire system will only cost about the same as a cell phone does today.

The architectural building ideas of vertical village design have an innovative and ultra modern design concept.

ACME, a design firm, submitted this stunning hive-like design to South Korea’s design competition, which called for designs for a memorial space in a United Nations Peace Park. Individual cells are combined to form this cube structure.

Atkins’ five-star resort hotel set would be set inside a water-filled quarry in the Songjiang, China. The 400-bed hotel would include underwater public areas and guestrooms. An extreme sports center, offering rock climbing and bungee jumping, would be suspended over the quarry.

Crescent Hydropolis, currently being constructed in Dubai, will be the world’s first luxury underwater hotel. To enter the 200 submarine suites, guests will arrive at a land station, then be transported via train to the main area of the hotel offshore. The 1.1-million-square-foot area will include a shopping mall, restaurants, movie theaters, and missile-defense system, all 60-feet underwater.

Daniel Libeskind conceived this striking skyscraper for Gazprom City, St. Petersburg.

Leg amputees, if not wheelchair-bound, are often left struggling with awkward prosthetics, canes, and crutches. But now, with the aid of newly developed super-legs, even double amputees can run every bit as well as some of the world’s fastest sprinters. This all began in the 2000 paralympics (which I promise is a real thing and not just me being a bastard about wordplay) with a South African man named Oscar Pistorius who became the first amputee to complete the 200-meter dash in under 22 seconds, beating the previous world record, held by one Brian Frasure.

But there is some controversy over the legs’ use. While they only put out a 95% return of force as compared to the normal human legs’ 200% return, the running prosthetics also give the user a springing gait and increased stride distance, which could lend them an unfair advantage as well as a jaunty disposition. Considering that this story took place in the ancient days of the year of our lord, 2000, and the fact that the legs have since gone through countless permutations by a myriad of companies, many designs endow abilities well beyond typical human capacity. But god, consider what he’s sacrificed to get here! Not only has he been shot in the eye, but he’s demanded that said eye be removed, years later, and then replaced with something that normally goes up your butt. The man’s got a butt-eye for christ’s sake! Van Gogh may have cut off his ear, but until he replaces it with a dick, Rob Spence wins for craziest gesture in the name of art, hands down.

Invisibility

Scientists are getting damn close to inventing a true invisibility cloak. Previous efforts, like the one pictured before – while still scarily advanced – are nonetheless always slightly inaccurate, because they rely on a camera/projector technique. Recently, a paper published in the March 2009 issue of SIAM Review collected all that we currently know about the method of invisibility, and it turns out it’s a lot.

We can not only render things invisible in theory by bending light waves around an object, but have even progressed so far as to be developing the metamaterials needed to bring the theory to life.

Bullet Proff

D3O (d-3-o) is an exciting new development in bulletproofing material and not, as it sounds, a generic brand version of a Star Wars robot. Or rather, it’s an impact proof material which, in conjunction with already existing bulletproof materials, could provide true invulnerability to most gunshot wounds. As it stands now, you can survive many gunshot wounds with traditional Kevlar, but are likely to feel pretty poor afterwords, as the distributed force causes fleshwounds, broken bones and large concentric bruises – like getting your ass beat by the atmosphere. Oftentimes the impact from surviving a gunshot will temporarily knock the victim unconscious as well, leaving them vulnerable with a guy that has already made his feelings clear through the administration of bullets.
But D3O is set to stop that: It works kind of like cornstarch -iIt starts off as gel, but gets proportionally harder when more force is exerted on it (the dick joke here is just too easy, I have my standards.) When soft, the substance allows for greater flexure, but when rigid can reduce the strength of a bullet impact by more than half. And that’s what she said (I hate myself.)

The UK Ministry of Defense has already commissioned body and head armor using the new substance, obviously seeing the potential for better protection… or just because it looks really, really fun to grab. We’re talking bubble-wrap levels of tactile stimulation here, people.

We know that Japan is some kind of wonderland because a lot of people there do like some funny and some bizarre things. One of obsessions amongst Japanese people is their love for anime movies. They love them so much that they have started to build statues of some characters from those anime movies.

One of such statues is this 60-feet tall statue which was built in Shizuoka City. There is also one similar 60-feet tall statue in Odaiba district of Tokyo.

It’s a huge statue of one of the characters from Gundam anime movie designed by Yoshiyuki Tomino.

Why Men Prefer Bad Girls

This post was triggered off by something I heard on the radio last evening on my way back home. A lot has been said and many a storm has brewed over several cups of tea and coffee on what men and women want – not just in terms of each other or in a relationship, but in general. And, I for one, don’t have an answer yet. Don’t think any one of either sex does. There’s way too much oestrogen and testosterone on television for anybody’s good to make such a decision.
But to return to the discussion on radio, that, in turn, led to this post – do men prefer bad girls? Now this is as random as it can get, considering we’re not defining the term ‘bad’. Sundry men called in to say they’d prefer ‘bad girls’ because they’re ‘more fun’.
Yeah sure! And might I ask, what their idea of ‘fun’ is? The excitement and thrill of doing ‘naughty’ things that ‘stuck-up’, ‘good girls’ wouldn’t do, like taking off on a bike to an unknown destination till the cops come after you? They say they get along better with the ‘bad girls’ — you know “great minds think alike” and all that; they’re an impulsive lot, don’t care much for a relationship and yet give the boys a good time. Whatever their idea of ‘fun’, this lot of men believe only ‘bad’ girls are good for them, as the cliche goes.
As Donna Summer’s critically acclaimed number goes:

mister, do you want to spend some time, oh yeah
I got what you want
you got what I need
I’ll be your baby
come and spend it on me

Then there is the shameless lot that prefers a ‘bad girl’ as a girlfriend but would like a ‘good girl’ for a wife. And that’s the quintessential middle-class Indian guy for you. They desire the undesirable, they hanker for the forbidden fruit but when it comes to making choices, Mommy dearest will pick the ripest, prettiest, can’t-say-no-to fruit of the lot. They are the hypocrites who want the best of both worlds. And then as my colleague Tarun says: “Mature men don’t go for ‘bad girls’.” These are the ones that give gyaan on ‘responsibility’ and such like when they talk of ‘settling down’.
Unlike MJ, they aren’t man enough to say:

(Really, Really Bad)

But they want the ‘bad girls’ to liven up their lives just before they settle to a life of unadulterated, blissful domesticity. Really in this day and age, is there such a categorisation of good and bad? Or do you just do it? You know, go for the kill?
Maybe it’s time they think beyond just sport (no, I don’t mean football) – the good, the bad and the ugly part of it. Be the metrosexual man and own up, step out of the closet and talk about what you really like about the ‘bad girls’ apart from the ‘fun’ part of it.
Tell us, if you have the… oh, never mind.

Will Aishwarya Beat Katrina ?

The year 2010 may not have started on a good note for once upon a time reigning queen of Bollywood, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, with her much hyped RAAVAN failing to make a mark at the ticket window. However, seeing the great line up, it appears that the second half may see the queen bee returning to reclaim here throne from the numero-uno actress Katrina Kaif.
Fans of Aishwarya will await the month of November with bated breath as not one but two of her films will see a worldwide release. The first to hit the screens will be Vipul Shah’s ACTION REPLAYY opposite the in form ‘Khiladi’ who already has a hit in HOUSEFULL. The film is due to release on 5th November during the ‘Diwali’ weekend and seeing the cent per cent success record of Vipul-Akshay and trade report (which predicts a sure shot winner in the film), we are pretty certain that ACTION REPLAYY will definitely be Ash’s first big hit of the year.
Next to follow is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s GUZAARISH which releases on November 17th. Aishwarya is opposite the super hero Hrithik Roshan. Up till now both the movies (DHOOM 2 and JODHAA AKBAR) that Ash and Hrithik have done together have turned out to be hits and the audience loves their pairing a lot. The film may not be an out and out commercial project like ACTION REPLAYY yet it will attract the multiplex crowd who want something hatke from the league and so it will not be wrong to expect Aish and Bhansali to work their magic once again after HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM.
